Galaxy’s Edge Creatures
One day, I had an idea no one asked for.
I had heard through the grapevine that a Creature Shop of sorts was to be added to Galaxy’s Edge. I knew that I, a lover of all things slimey and googley-eyed, had to take a crack at it. I went home that weekend and hodge-podged together a creature I knew and loved from the Star Wars universe: The humble Ollopom. I thought I could utilize its lily pad shape for an unexpected reveal— I could hide it amongst plants and then fill the tank with water to reveal his little reptilian feet underneath. What you’ll see first beneath is a little video I took of the quick and dirty mockup I made that day, bag of bagels and everything.
When I plopped it on my boss’ desk that Monday morning, he was kind enough to hear me out. I was so nervous watching him watch my little Ollopom swim to the top. But long story short, the Creative Director ended up asking for more creepy crawlies. So that’s exactly what I did! While working on Galaxy’s Edge, I mocked up everything from slug guts to Dianogas, and I had the time of my life. I still can’t believe when I walk through the park, that all these funny lookin’ little babies (or just their guts, in one particular case) originated from my very own sketchbook.
Below, you’ll find my original concepts alongside simple feasibility sketches, and some quick videos of the finished critters.
